Largest Métis Community in BC Decides to Work with BCMF

SEPTEMBER 21, 2011

(Surrey, BC) British Columbia Métis Federation (BCMF) President Keith Henry met with the NOVA Métis Heritage Association (NOVA) board members last weekend as follow up to a recent discussion held during the NOVA Annual General Meeting in late August. The result of the meeting this past weekend was that the NOVA board voted by majority in favour of signing a Statement of Cooperation with the BCMF. The signing of the Statement of Cooperation was completed during a small signing ceremony earlier today at the NOVA office in Surrey, BC.

NOVA is believed to be one of the largest Chartered Communities of the thirty five in British Columbia with approximately 500 MNBC citizenship carrying members and an estimated 1500 NOVA members who have yet to apply under the MNBC membership process. NOVA was one of six recognized Métis communities in the Lower Mainland Region (Region 2) under the MNBC governance system.

  2. Helllo Ken and Joyce! I’m in Sechelt now for the lasst four years and am just about to apply for my provincial Metis Citizenship – finally eh? Just one more of us to add to the legitimate list and that’s a good thing. I believe my son Arin is coming in with Ric on Tuesday to register as well. You’ll enjoy his company – at least I hope you will.

Glad that Ric’s getting lots of good support from you and surprised you’re still around but it’s a GOOD thing! All the best… Bobbie Smith

  4. Hi- The Nova Metis Heritage Association AGM was a success as we added 3 new board members to the BOD for 2011-2012 year of operation. The potluck had a great variety of food – delicious for sure – all those who came had their fill of the good food and refreshments. The hall was a good place to have the event but there was room for a few more. All heard a annual report and financial update by President Ken Fisher. The floor was open for questions or comments from anyone and a good interesting dialogue took place as members asked about the state of the Nova Metis office in Surrey and also about the future of Nova Metis,

The general consensus is that NMHA is financially sound and prosperous but needs more assistance for fund raising as they have no staff persons and much work needs to be done yet, Only volunteers are running our office but donations from several sources are coming in from time to time. The Nova office is open in the Dell Plaza in Surrey to serve the many Metis people from Metro Vancouver and out to the Fraser alley and beyond. Call 604-634-0119 for more info. All Welcome!

MNBC regional director?? Henry Hall made a surprise appearance and was given a chance to explain why he has been absent and incommunicado for many months. He tried to explain that he has been very ill in the last year or so which was why he has not been communicating with Lower Mainland Metis citizens. Everyone was very sympathetic. and expressed an understanding. But later in his speech he was taken to task by several Nova members in attendance for his lack of expected representation as MNBC rep as was his duty. However he was treated kindly and was given a plate of goodies before he left. We wish him well!

Please bear with me as a full report of the event in more detail will be forthcoming on the next few days. Keep checking this Nova website for more news about the Metis in this area and beyond, of course. Thanks and email to novametis@shaw.ca anytime. Thanks for your attention to our announcements. KJF- Have a nice day!

    • After reading the letter sent to you Ken I am sorry to hear of all this commotion, especially after all the selfless years you have put into the Metis community from the Nova Office. All the best and look forward to the developing story.

    • Hi Dear Friends of Nova Metis – We have been so busy with Metis business at the office I’ve neglected to keep this site updated. That is about to change so watch for that. There is much news to bring to your attention. Thank you for your patience and I will try to keep things up to date with the webmasters assistance.
Have a nice day in January 2012, the 22nd. Our office # is 604-634-0119.

For now be sure to check the BC Metis Federation website at http://www.bcmetis.com Lotsa news and views on that site that will never come from MNBC as they are gone silent as far as meaningful updates of their activities in the past 2 or 3 years. Try it and see. Ken
